Incendiary Device Gets Thrown at Albanian PM’s Office

(MENAFN) An attack involving a Molotov cocktail targeted Albania’s Prime Ministry headquarters on Tuesday as anti-government demonstrations intensified in the capital.

Large crowds assembled outside the government building after the main opposition Democratic Party (PD) urged supporters to take to the streets, alleging widespread corruption within the administration.

During the protest, individuals calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation threw Molotov cocktails, fireworks, smoke canisters and other objects toward the building. The unrest prompted a forceful response from law enforcement, who deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators. Confrontations were also reported near the parliament complex, where protesters and security personnel clashed.

Multiple injuries occurred over the course of the prolonged demonstrations, largely attributed to tear gas exposure and related disturbances.

In addition to demanding Rama’s resignation, participants called for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku to step down. Balluku had been suspended on Nov. 19 over corruption allegations before subsequently being reinstated.
Authorities mobilized hundreds of police officers across Tirana, shutting down several major roads as a precaution.

Opposition groups have organized a series of protests in recent months and have indicated their intention to sustain pressure on the government through continued demonstrations.
